Hi Riley, please tell us a little about you?
I’m a twenty year-old Nashville native, who’s grown up all around music. I’m a homebody that loves to travel. I’m an 8 or a 4 on the Enneagram depending on the day.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Creative, Optimistic, adventurous
Who has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why?
My mom – she’s the strongest, most resilient woman I’ve ever known.
How did you get started in the business?
From a very young age, I was always drawn towards music, writing, and singing. I met my manager when I was 12, at a school choir concert… completely unplanned. I started taking writing sessions in Nashville by the age of 13. From there, I started learning the industry & my personal artistry. I signed my first publishing deal at 15, and signed with Capitol CMG at 16.
Did you go to music school?
I started taking vocal lessons when I was seven, and throughout middle and high school I was always involved in acapella groups, choir, theatre, dance… basically any performing art.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Vulnerable, Versatile, and fresh
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I grew up on southern gospel music, which immediately was invigorating to me. It’s passionate and soulful. As I grew up, I fell in love with pop music… the clean-cut, constantly evolving sounds. From Aretha, to Kirk Franklin, to Dua Lipa… my musical taste is pretty vast. I wanted to make music that reflected the unique sounds that I constantly was pulling inspiration from, and the unique perspective I have on life, in the most honest way possible.
Do you ever get nervous?
Absolutely! I used to get a lot more nervous than I do now, but I think some degree of nerves is healthy & exciting. I hope I always get a little nervous.
What is your next goal as a musician?
To keep making music that’s authentic sonically & lyrically to where I am in life. I’m excited to get back to playing shows & meeting more listeners.
Now tell us about your new video for “Over and Over?”
Aaaah! This has by far been one of my favorite videos we’ve done, and the first video I’ve ever directed. I filmed this video at home during social isolation, with my family & next to no equipment. We pulled old home video footage & behind the scenes footage from past shows & shoots. My family & I had the best time spending time together, & capturing our natural dynamic on camera.
What is the message behind this video/song?
Obviously during such unknown times, it can be difficult to find the light. With that, a lot of change has come in work and day to day life. This video & song has been a source of light for me. Between pushing myself to try something new (like directing a video from home), and pushing myself to believe that I’m truly loved and chosen despite how lonely the world seems, this song has taken on a whole new meaning. I hope listeners are reminded that they’re loved…. that there’s hope in every new day.
What is the feeling to have such a huge reach and love all over the world on your social media platforms?
It’s such a blessing to get to connect with so many people all over the world. I can’t quite put that feeling into words. It’s special. I don’t take it for granted.
Do you have a tour coming up or where we can see you performing?
Yes!! I’ll be touring this fall. Details to come!!
What we can expect of Riley Clemmons in 2020?
More music, more shows, more videos…. I’ve got lots of surprises up my sleeve.
What is you favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Anything Billy Joel.
Name one your strengths?
The past few years have taught me resilience in ways I’ve never thought possible.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Finding peace, love, and hope one day at a time.
Any loves other than music?
Travel, cooking, my family, working out!
Any exiting news you want to share with us?
I’m putting out a new version of my single “Over and Over” with a VERY special guest. I am so excited.
How’s a typical day in your life?
During quarantine, I wake up, have coffee, workout, then work in the afternoon, whether it’s a write, session, interviews, meetings, etc. I usually spend the evening cooking & relaxing with my family.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
Coffee in bed, church, lunch outside with my friends, spending time outside, and a late dinner with game night!
