Hi BRE, please tell us a little about you?
Hey! I’m BRE, I’m a pop-rock artist and producer out of Los Angeles, CA. I am obsessed with being on stage and getting lost in YouTube rabbit holes. Music is my everything and my dream is to someday headline a stadium.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Ambitious
Optimistic
Caring
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
When I was 12, I won an international acting competition and my family decided to pack up and move to California to give me a shot at acting. I did that for a while before realizing that being as tall as I am (I’m 5’11”), I was limited in the roles I’d be able to play. My crowning achievement in acting was playing ‘Jenna the tall girl’ in a show. That was literally the name of the character. I stepped away from acting to pursue music and have been an artist now for over 12 years.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Anthemic
Hooky
Uplifting
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Music is in my blood, so I don’t know if there’s a real ‘reason’ I chose to make it – I just kind of had to in order to express myself. When I was young, I saw the movie August Rush with Freddie Highmore and Robin Williams, and I was so inspired by the way the main character August thought about music. I even got a tattoo of a quote from the movie. Artists who’ve inspired my writing style and sound would have to be people like Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, and Bono to name a few.
Do you play any instrument?
I play a couple. I started on the acoustic guitar, then taught myself piano. I play basic drums and bass as well. I could probably also play a mean triangle if you ask nicely.
Tell us about your new single “Rather Be Alone?”
“Rather Be Alone” is about enjoying being single rather than putting up with someone who treats you like garbage. It’s about seeing the beauty in the time you have by yourself, rather than feeling like there’s something wrong with you for having high standards. I want people to feel empowered in their singleness when listening to this song, rather than desperate to find someone in order to not be alone.
What’s the story behind the song?
I wrote this song in like 10 minutes after dealing with a f*ckboy. It was one of those situations we’ve all experienced – you meet someone, click right away, set up a date, and then they get flakey or don’t respond until multiple days later because ‘they’re busy.’ I just got so fed up with being treated like an option rather than being respected as a person that I wrote this song.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Seeing everything come together the way I had envisioned. I have a very small team at this point, and am acting as my own manager. So almost everything that gets set up, organized, or done, I’m doing it. It’s so cool to see when the work that I put in on the admin side helps promote my creative work. I love being an entrepreneur almost as much as I love being an artist, so seeing those two sides of myself work together towards my ultimate goal is incredibly rewarding.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
The Go Giver by Bob Burg and John D Mann. It’s an incredible book about going above and beyond for your customer (in this case your audience) and providing the maximum amount of value, which in the end, creates customer loyalty.
What would say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
Being an artist is a lifestyle not an end result. I used to see success in my artistry as reaching a certain goal in my career, but I’ve realized that being an artist is a constantly evolving process. Take joy in that process and continue to balance your normal life alongside your artistic pursuits.
How would your best friend describe you?
Intense haha. Fun to be around. Relatively chill when I’m not working. But definitely a workaholic. Extroverted x 100 and usually the life of the party.
What’s next for BRE in 2023?
Lots of exciting things! I will be releasing new music, new music videos, fun marketing campaigns to support all of those, alongside collaborations with other artists. I may also be featured in a show coming out in the near future…. follow me on social media for that announcement!
How would you explain your fashion style?
Depends on the day. I have this harness thing that I layer on top of of my outfits, alongside a lot of metal jewelry which gives me very much a fashionable dominatrix vibe – not necessarily what I’m going for, but it weirdly works. When I’m not rocking that, it’s usually vintage chic.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Being at peace within myself and content no matter what is going on in my life.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to meet Stevie Nicks. She has inspired me so much in my artistic journey as well as in how I view myself as a woman. She has such a powerful presence and yet such vulnerability in her lyrics that creates this beautiful dichotomy all in one person.
What would be the dream holiday, and who would you go with?
I’m about to go on it! A group of 8 friends and I are going on a European trip the Barcelona, Prague, and Paris for ten days in March. I’m stoked on that, but honestly, I want to go everywhere. I’m excited to be touring the world so I can see more of it!
Best advice ever given?
Never expect anyone to work harder for you than you’re willing to work for yourself.
Do you support any charity?
Yes, a couple. Wounded Warrior Project for Veterans, Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children, and The Humane Society.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I’ll have finished a world tour. Continuing to work my way to headlining a stadium. Hopefully have bought a house. Dabbling in acting roles while continuing to create more music.
What is you favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Probably “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston!
