Ebony Buckle is a London-based singer/songwriter, originally from the tropical seaside town of Townsville, Australia. Taking listeners on a whimsical leftfield-pop journey with her complex harmonies and imaginative storytelling lyricism, Buckle sings about universal themes of romance and broken hearts to more poetic themes of disgruntled mermaids, lonely whales and joyous, hypothetical alien invasions.
Over the last couple of years, Buckle has realised that in order to create an authentic narrative and preserve her unique creative style, she had to make her own music. She confides, “I am a naturally shy person and sometimes find it hard to be myself in front of other people, but music has really helped me connect to my true self. I feel like the songs I write come straight from my inner dialogue and they are a true expression of who I am”. She writes and performs with her husband, musician Nick Burns, who also produces her music.
Her latest single “Ghost” details the heart-wrenching experience that Buckle and her English husband Nick endured during their fight to renew her visa after their marriage. Despite her specific experience, Ghost is a universal song of love, loss, commitment and pain of feeling utterly helpless. “Ghost” was written over Skype between her and her newly-wed husband, as they were kept apart for nearly two years. It was a time in their lives when normality was turned upside down, and they were put in limbo.

Hi Ebony, please tell us a little about you?
I am a singer/songwriter and actor living in London! I have an imaginary best friend called Susan the Raptor and I am a keen interpretive dancer.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
This brings back too many memories of bad job interviews so I can’t. I’m sorry!
How did you get started in the business?
I have always written poetry and music but it has only been in the last 5 years that I have had the confidence to actually get it out into the world.
Did you go to music school?
Yes I studied classical music first in Australia, and then moved to London to study Musical Theatre.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Whimsical, dramatic, quirky
Do you ever get nervous?
Yes always! It’s nerve wracking putting out music that you wrote. I get nervous just before performing. Live Streaming is a whole new set of nerves because you are so dependent on the technical side of things! But most of the time I try to harness that nervous energy for good!
What is your next goal as a musician?
I am currently recording my first album which is really exciting. My goal is to create a community around my music and so this year I started my Patreon page patreon.com/ebonybuckle and my members are able to be part of the creation of my music. Someone recently told me that listening to my music was like stepping into a parallel universe. So that’s what I want to create…a universe filled with lonely whales and aliens and mermaids and life. I use music to connect to my emotions and I really hope my music does the same for someone else.
Now tell us about your new single “Ghost?”
Ghost is one of my most personal songs but I hope people are able to resonate with it themselves. My husband Nick and I wrote the song over skype when we were separated for nearly 2 years due to visa difficulties. I was depressed and this song was the first time I had been able to write or create so it felt like a way back. It’s taken us 6 years to get this song out and it feels like we are finally letting go of that experience. I hope.
The music video is out too. I filmed it last year with my Brother who is a really talented filmmaker. Click here!
What we can expect of Ebony Buckle in 2020?
So, an album is coming next year and this year we are recording it in our home studio! I’m hoping to keep growing my Patreon and making music and music videos. So lots more is on the way!
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. My brother and I actually filmed our own version of the music video and you can watch it here
Name one your strengths?
I am a strong swimmer.
How’s a typical day in your life?
At the moment we are at home all the time. We are really lucky to have our own studio here so we have been recording lots. I generally exercise in the morning and then start work. It’s important to have a routine when you are self employed. I also have started gardening and am growing lots of vegetables which is very exciting!
How would you describe your fashion style?
Um…eclectic? I love fashion and experimenting with outfits and sometimes it’s a ‘swing and a miss’!
