Although starting out as a social media star, Tara recently switched gears in her career and embarked across America on her successful multi-city stand up tour Selling Myself Short Tour. Hi Tara, please tell us a little about you?
My name is Tara Yummy. I’m a YouTuber, I like vlogging my life and letting people watch the stupid things I do every week
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Fun, Crazy, Short
What is the best and worst part of being a popular influencer and up-and-coming stand up comedian?
Wow! The best thing is probably getting to connect with all of my supporters, and the worst thing is probably people’s assumptions about my life.
What do you think makes someone great at stand up compared to other stand up comedians?
I don’t think I’m in a high enough position as a comedian to speak on that. But as a fan of comedy, I think what makes a great stand up comedian is good crowd work – that can always make me laugh!
Where does your new found talent for stand up comedy come from?
I still don’t necessarily know if it’s a newfound talent, more so that I have always had an interest in doing it because I thought it looked so fun!
Now tell us about your successful multi-city stand up tour, Selling Myself Short Tour? And where can we see you next in terms of stand up?
My first tour was so much fun! I had done one comedy show locally in LA, but this time it was awesome to travel and meet all of my viewers from all over the country! In terms of next steps for stand-up, I would absolutely LOVE to do a Vegas show, and hopefully another tour!
Can you describe your creative process of how you prepare for a tour/show?
I write down my story times and fit in as many jokes as I can into that story. Then I write it down in a notebook, and read it out loud a bunch of times until I memorize it.
What’s your advice for the up and coming stand up comedians?
Oh man! I feel like I am still learning every day, I have only done one tour! So I guess I would say, there are definitely going to be good shows and bad shows. Don’t let the bad shows make you nervous to go back on stage! The hardest part is just getting out there.
Switching gears to social media, how do you get inspired to make new content?
I honestly just map out my week and think of what people would want to see. I try to film the parts of my week that people would want to see most!
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Meeting people in public or on tour who are a fan of my content and knowing that there are real people watching me and it’s not just a camera I’m talking into. It’s so cool to see that they are more than just a number and a like, but real people watching me!
What would you say are the greatest lessons you learned so far in this business?
Don’t let other people’s opinions control your day-to-day life.
What do you think is the secret to having a successful IG, TikTok and YouTube accounts?
Try to stay on top of trends – don’t feel like what you are posting is cringy because people will most likely enjoy it! Also, consistency is key!
As a popular influencer and stand up comedian, you are followed by so many people. How do you feel about the pressure of always doing the “right thing,” and encourage people to follow their dreams?
In the wise words of Hannah Montana, “Nobody’s Perfect” – I just have to try my best and hope that can be enough. Obviously YouTubers are people too, and as human beings we all have flaws.
Now talking about Instagram, can you share some tips for keeping your account interesting?
I love a photo dump once in a while! I’m guilty of posting mostly selfies, but I love fun carousels where people show what they are up to with their friends.
How would your best friend describe you?
I asked, they answered: “Such a Leo”
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
“Confessions of a Fangirl” – because that’s basically the title of my diary.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Stop being nice to people who aren’t nice to you.
What’s next for Tara Yummy in 2023?
Hopefully a better haircut….Just kidding. More videos, maybe another tour, hopefully I can reach my 1 Million YouTube plaque!
What is your own definition of happiness?
My dog Sugar
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Freddy Mercury, because he’s Persian like me and is incredibly inspirational by being unapologetically himself, his whole life, even when people didn’t agree with it.
Best advice ever given?
Always read a door, because if you pull when it says “push” it’s always embarrassing
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
This question is so hard for me. Hopefully happy! That’s all I want. In terms of career, I hope to still be doing what I’m doing, hopefully with a bigger platform and making more people laugh!
Favorite song? And why?
It changes all the time! Right now my favorite song is “Starstruck” by 3OH!3
What do you think of Social Media overall?
Overall I think it’s a good thing. I think sometimes bad people that have access to it can create problems, but ultimately it does help people connect.
