Hi Carly, please tell us a little about you?
I’m originally from Shelton, CT, went to college in Boston, and moved to LA 8 years ago. I’m a Scorpio, mainly Italian & Finnish, an enneagram 8, and a major introvert…even though everyone thinks I’m an extrovert.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Unapologetic
Quirky
Persevering
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I sang growing up and decided to go to Berklee College of Music for Music Business & Songwriting. I decided to move out to Los Angeles right after college andddddd I stayed!
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Dark
Transparent
Relatable
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
My dad growing up had a massive record/cd collection and played music all day everyday. My mom was a dancer, so my whole life I was surrounded by artists and music. I never really felt like I chose it, it was the only way I felt I could communicate my vulnerabilities, especially growing up in a broken home.
Do you play any instrument?
I mess around on the guitar but nothing crazy.
Do you ever get nervous?
I still get nervous before shows or if I’m writing in front of new people.
Tell us about your newest single “No One?”
No One was written a few years ago by my friend Brittney Spencer & I shortly after we both were roommates for The Voice. She lives in Nashville so we hadn’t really revisited it until I brought it to my guitar player, Phillip Menenes who helped arrange it.
What’s the story behind this song?
I lost both my parents a few years ago and I was driving home one night from my friend’s and I was just reallyyyy sad that night. It’s always in waves, you never know when it’s gonna hit, but when it does it’s just rough. The lyrics “no one’s losing sleep over me” came to my mind bc as I was driving I just felt like if I had gotten a flat tire, I had no one to call. I always felt a burden to my friends, no parents, my brothers and sisters were living their own life. It was really just a song about my deep depression and isolation when my parents died.
Did you had plans/concerts planned and cancelled because of COVID? If so have you done any online concerts or interaction with your fans?
I always have a release show for anything I put out in the world so it’s sad to not be able to connect with people in that way. In the meantime, I’ve been livestreaming on several different apps, mainly one called Bigo. I love the community on there, and I’ve made a number of really talented friends. Aside from that, I started posting Youtube Videos consistently again.
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
I love what writing does for my own sanity, it helps me let out everything happening in my brain whether it be anger, sadness, happiness. I also love how I randomly get messages of people telling me how they truly connected with something I’ve written. I always write for my own healing, things I’d want to listen to, so it’s really cool when people reach out and tell me what they felt with something I put out into the world.
The music industry is ever changing, and musicians really don’t make a ton from writing at the moment with streaming fees being so low, so learning how to adapt has been interesting. I’ve had to work a lot of odd jobs and I never felt secure in my 20’s. It’s a very up & down career.
What are the five things you can’t live without?
Music, Iced Coffee, Wifi, Sparkling Water (specifically Topo Chico), my family
What’s next for Carly Lind in 2020?
As of right now, I’m focusing on finishing songs I’ve wanted to for years but never had the budget or time. Now with Covid, as jarring as the situation has been, I’ve tried to make the best of it.
What is your favorite song? And why?
My favorite song everrrrr is VooDoo Child (Slight Return) – Jimi Hendrix. I love Jimi, his soul and everything from that era. I’m not positive what the lyrics exactly mean but I always thought “I’m standing up next to a mountain and chop it down with the edge of my hand.” could mean even if you’re small you can move mountains and maybe make something even better with it. I also just love rock n roll, how freeing it can be, how artists let their instruments talk a little more and a little longer than they do now.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
Indie Bread: How To Make Six Figures From Home as an Independent Musician – Mickey Shiloh
What is the toughest decision you had to make in the last few months?
I think at the top of Quarantine, I wrestled with going home to my brother’s or stay in LA.
Any loves other than music?
I grew up dancing so I also have professionally danced for music videos and artists which led to me also exploring yoga and teaching yoga/fitness for a while. I also grew up with a father in the stock market so business seems to be in my blood. Social Media and branding has become another passion of mine that has really helped with my music career.
Best advice ever given?
Not to care what people think…but like truly lol. I went through a whole dance program where our homework was recording us doing wild things in public, then eventually full dance choreography. It was so freeing & it’s empowered me.
How’s a typical day in your life?
I do a lot…lol so my brain is all over the place. To best describe it, think of 20 tabs open at the same time on your internet server. It’s chaos, but it’s organized chaos. Quarantine, I’ve gotten to live my truest body clock, so I wake up at noon, take an hour to chill and drink my coffee and then I start on my computer answering emails, posting content to multiple apps & then I tend to start to write later at night.
Name one your strengths?
Surviving & Encouraging people
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
Sleeping until noon, getting my favorite coffee, taking a hot yoga class at 5 pm and getting in bed to watch a show.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Currently..Here I Go Again- White Snake.
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness is really simple. A place to live, food to eat, enough money for financial stability and the freedom to just make my own schedule. Family & music mixed into all of that and I’m good.
Do you support any charities?
I work for a nonprofit that I’m super passionate about called Reach Up Reach Out ! They support widows and orphans in Uganda. I usually go every year to visit the kid I put through school there, Koma 😉
What is your favorite healthy food?
Watermelon or frozen grapes.
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
If you ask me to split the bill.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I’m all over the board. Sometimes I feel really girly, other times you can tell I’m a dancer with the urban streetwear, but most of the time I dress pretty alternatively.
What do you think of Social Media?
Honestly, I love social media if used correctly. It has given me more opportunities than I’ve ever imagined. I think the best decision I did was treat it more as a job than a recreational thing, that way I’m not on it obsessing, but using it as a tool.
