Hi Bri, please tell us a little about you?
Hi! I’m Bri. I’m a singer-songwriter and cinematic pop artist currently based in Los Angeles, but I had a pretty nomadic childhood. I grew up between two musical worlds: my mother’s midwestern roots of country and pop, and my father and adoptive mother’s love of classic rock, 80s pop, and jazz. While moving around a lot and as a kid, I was always writing songs and emulating the artists I heard. I remember feeling like the singers I listened to were my peers.
Initially, I moved to LA to pursue acting—not music. I think there was a little fear
there. After working in a karaoke bar and gigging around town, I started booking way more as a singer and went with it.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Warm. Goofy. Intense.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
When I moved to LA, I started gigging at a hotel lounge in Bel Air. That residency led to other gigs, sessions with a label and some really great industry connections. I met my producer in 2019 and when the pandemic hit, we recorded “Slowly” and the rest of my upcoming EP.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Soulful. Cinematic. Honest.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I was fortunate in that I always knew what I wanted to do. I can’t remember a time when singing didn’t feel natural and right. Because of my background, I grew up listening to such a range of artists. Vocally I’d say I’m influenced by Ann Wilson (Heart), Amy Winehouse, Amy Lee, Dido, Adele, Etta James, Britney Spears, Idina Menzel… so many more.
Do you play any instrument?
I write and accompany myself on keys!
Do you ever get nervous?
Yes of course. 🙂
Tell us about your debut single “Slowly?” What’s the story behind the song?
“Slowly” is the first released single off of my debut EP Somewhere Else. I started writing it in 2019 and then shelved it because I couldn’t quite figure out its voice. I had just professed my feelings to a close friend and was in the period of (torturous) suspense before their response. I remember feeling like I was free-falling but finding a strange comfort in it because I was still living in the possibility of them feeling the same way. I wasn’t ready for a response quite yet. I ended up getting exactly what I asked for in my lyrics: they responded slowly. A year later in fact. We got together, the song found its voice and he ended up producing the track written about him (and killing it). It was a wild full circle experience.
Which project is still on your bucket list?
I want to release a broken down (production-wise) album! Lean more into my jazz and rock roots. I’d also love to bring to life a juicy film role.
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
My job is my passion and I feel insanely lucky to be able to say that. I love the autonomy I have over what I do. I love that I have full reign of the creative decisions and, for the most part, I’m my own boss. Conversely, there are certain pressures that come along with being an artist and aspects of music as an industry that can be toxic if left unchecked.
What’s next for Bri Oglu in 2022?
I have a couple of exciting prospects happening at the end of the year and into 2023, but I can’t reveal them quite yet!
What is you favorite song? And why?
I go through phases, but I’m pretty into “Crazy” by Willie Nelson right now. I love how the lyrics perfectly capture something so intimate in all of us. I also love the melody.
Any loves other than music?
I love acting and film.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Dolly Parton comes to mind.
She is a true entertainer, an incredible songwriter, unapologetically glamorous, and loved by such a wide demographic. She makes people feel good and has an immense impact on the world without being offensive or polarizing. I’d love to just be in her presence.
Best advice ever given?
From my Dad. He always tells me to “just keep swimming!” (Yes, he stole it from Finding Nemo). I think it’s crucial to put blinders on sometimes, stay in your own lane and just keep going.
How’s a typical day in your life?
I’m not someone with a set routine, but I often grab coffee from my favorite local spot, do lots of work emails, head to hot yoga / the gym and then a session or gig if I’m booked that day. After a booking, I usually stop for takeout and head back home to watch a film and go to sleep! If I’m not booked, I’ll go for a night drive, catch live music, or meet up with a friend. This all goes out the window when I’m in writing mode. 🙂
Name one your strengths?
Tenacity.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
I love going on drives. A drive down the coast with a good playlist, coffee and snacks sounds ideal.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
“AND I AM TELLING YOU”
What is your own definition of happiness?
I think happiness is a sense of belonging, safety and flow. It looks different for everyone. For me, it’s a space where my anxiety is quelled and I’m doing what I love, typically surrounded by loved ones.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Avocados, Sushi, Salads, Fruits, Poke Bowls.
And your favorite cheat food?
Cheesecake, Ice Cream, Chocolates, Pizza, Club Sandwiches.
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
Someone who isn’t a good listener. If I can see in their eyes that they’re just waiting for a pause to speak again, it’s a no-go.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Continuing to do what I love, but on a larger scale: getting more of my music into TV & film, acting more, touring more and having the resources to really give back in the way I want to.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I’d say simple with eclectic accents. I love the clean look of basics, paired with statement pieces like vintage jackets, shoes, colorful jewelry etc. etc.
What do you think of Social Media?
I love the exposure and platform it provides. I love that it creates opportunity for nearly everyone, which is rad. It also feels good to get that “like” or to support loved ones or other artists. Conversely, I hate how easy it is to become addicted to it, and how quickly (and relentlessly) it can pull you from the present.
