Hi Beck, please tell us a little about you?
Well hello there. I’m an artist more than anything else – dedicated to exploration, observation and creating music that makes people feel a little more alive. I’m a little woo woo. I squeal out loud when I see something that feels like mine. I really, really like cake, but I probably like learning about you more. I’m really good at making dating profiles. I’m single.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Evocative, textured, rich
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Growing up I was influenced by huge pop stars who created immersive experiences – Britney Spears, Shania Twain, Michael Jackson, etc.
I loved the way that they made art with their mouths AND body, and how that extended to their larger than life visuals. Even though I now understand that there are huge teams behind projects like that, back then I sort of just thought they were creating these alternate worlds on their own.
I liked those worlds better than mine, and I thought maybe I’d make my own. I learned to express myself through performance before any other way. I thought it was possible to make these worlds by myself at that point, and because of that, I threw myself into several different artforms – always with the idea that I would combine them all one day.
Tell us about your new single “Bite Down?”
Bite Down is a sexy and simultaneously sort of silly song about extremism. As humans, I feel that we are inherently pretty extreme, adapting to things from an early age by saying “this not that,” instead of “a little bit of this AND a little bit of that.”
I think finding ourselves in the middle is something that happens later in life when we already feel like we’ve got everything figured out for the most part. At least that’s when it happened for me. I also feel like we’re always finding a new middle. This song is about that – feeling like we’ve found the answer, and realizing that maybe that we weren’t wrong to think that, but also that there might be a different one now.
And about the other songs in the “Scared Of Everything Part 2” album?
Part 2 has some of the more pop leaning records on the album, which is fun. It tells stories about moments where different types of love and heartbreak helped to show me where I belonged in the world, and simultaneously taught me to be afraid of everything and do it all anyway.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Connecting with people. Allowing people to feel seen. There is nothing that brings me more joy than someone expressing that they feel more understood after hearing a bit of my story. I feel that connection is the reason we exist, really.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
You are more inherently interesting and beautiful the more that you are yourself.
How would your best friend describe you?
Emotionally intelligent to a fault. Actually Funny. Incredibly soft. Irresponsibly open. “Very specific” – actual quote.
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
This album is sort of my memoir, so I guess I would say “Scared Of Everything.”
What’s next for Beck Pete in the last months of 2023?
Releasing more music and writing as much as possible for the next album. Finding flow as often as possible. Dancing and sweating more.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I could eat Salmon Sashimi for every meal for the rest of my life.
And your favorite cheat food?
Cake cake cake cake cake
Best advice ever given?
The “imagine the audience in their underwear” one is pretty good
Do you support any charity?
Many, but Children’s International has a special place in my heart. Helping less fortunate children to have access to a more beautiful future is very important to me.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I see myself writing songs for a lot more people. Making and selling clothing pieces as an extension of my art. Using my hands in some way or another with any piece of art I put out. Probably touring somewhere with a husband who holds my hand everywhere we go and kisses my eyelids every time I blink.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
“Any Man Of Mine” – Shania Twain
