Check out our interview with teen pop sensation Paula DeAnda.
Following the success of her hit Gold-Certified single “Doing Too Much,” Paula became a name to know in the industry. In 2006, she swiftly soared to stardom upon auditioning for Clive Davis, who signed her to Arista Record on the spot. Her self-titled debut album featured her iconic track “Walk Away (Remember Me),” which earned her a Top 20 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and 9th place on MTV’s “TRL.” The first album, her intro into the industry, solidified her as one to watch, having charted #54 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Paula went on to collaborate with the likes of Nelly, Lil Wayne, Akon, Frankie J, Baby Bash, Ne-Yo, Christine Millian, and several other top tier names in the music industry, before competing on The Voice in 2014 under Blake Shelton’s direction. Paula then continued to release new music annually, bringing her loyal fanbase along for the ride. However, Paula has yet to deliver a track as iconic as “Walk Away (Remember Me)” until now, with the release of her hit new single, “Freaky.”
Returning to her roots, “Freaky” is a true testament to Paula doing what she does best – deliver strong vocals, catchy lyrics, and tell a sultry story through song. “Freaky” is Paula all grown up, feeling her most confident and empowered self, and inspiring her listeners to step into their confidence as well. The edgy music video, which follows Paula falling for a woman, is an ode to the beauty of sexuality, strong female energy, and total authenticity, which are truly all pillars of Paula’s long-standing career.

Describe yourself in 3 words?
Magnetic, Kind, and Loving
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I always had a love for music and my interest for it just kept growing and from there, I took it to the next level. I started recording cover songs and original demos at the young age of 10. I would sing at any festival or gathering just to showcase my talent, plus, it made for great practice.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
R&B smooth, a hint of pop, and melodic
Do you play any instrument?
I do not play any instruments, but I always say that an individual’s voice is a built-in instrument
Do you ever get nervous?
I do get nerves but not always. It depends on that day… I’m pretty collected and calm person, so I think that helps
Tell us about your new single “Freaky?”
My new song Freaky is a fun, edgy, sexy ride. I’m tapping into being bold.
Now tell us about the big hit Gold-Certified single “Doing Too Much?”
Doing too much, till this day, is my baby. Not many people know that its one of the first songs to reach the charts without a label so its pretty special to me. I listen to it now and smile. I loved that particular era. It was fun. Singing about topics like doing too much I think brought me closer to my supporters. We’ve all been there.
Did you had plans/concerts planned and cancelled because of COVID? If so have you done any online concerts or interaction with your fans?
I did have performance plans. My show right before the rona was in Vegas. It felt amazing. I felt the crowd’s vibrations. It made me want to do it more, but life has a way of running things. I feel like that’s why I’m a go with the flow kind of gal. Planning feels like a restriction to me.
Tell us how was your experience competing on The Voice? And how was working under Blake Shelton’s direction?
The Voice was a different side of the industry I’ve never experienced. The behind the scenes were different. I haven’t been in a competition environment since my days of pageants, but it was something I wanted to do in order to push myself out of that comfort zone. I chose Blake and wanted to be on his team because I feel like he gets how to story tell. I also used to sing country music myself such as Jo Dee Messina, Leanna Rhymes, and Martina Mcbide.
Which project is still on your bucket list?
A project on my bucket list would be Paula D merch and landing a beauty campaign.
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
That connection with my fans through song sharing. I love the real emotions, happy feels, heartache, and just positive vibes. The most unrewarding thing about the music industry is the politics that unfortunately come with it.
What’s next for Paula DeAnda in 2021?
Working on putting together my next album. I want to give my day 1’s and new listeners a body of work.
What is your favorite song? And why?
I cannot say that I have a favorite song.
Any loves other than music?
Aside from my music, I’ve been really into the beauty world. Beauty is art!
Best advice ever given?
Best advice ever given would be any advice my Madre gives me. I really see her heart. She’s such a beautiful light.
How’s a typical day in your life?
Since I’m in album mode, I start by checking my email and socials for inspiring beats and/or demos. If I feel the song, I get right in the studio, record it, and put my own stamp on it. I love being hands on during the recording process. You’ll hear me doing adlibs, harmonies added, melodies – whatever my ear hears.
Name one your strengths?
I would say that one of my strengths is that I’m a solid person. I don’t feel the need to fabricate things; I am just me! I feel like when you know yourself, you don’t let other people sway you into anything not meant for you.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
Good question. Sometimes I forget what day it is but on Sundays, I try to reflect. I voice to myself what I am grateful for. I say one prayer consistently – word health, both physical and emotional.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
I love belting all kinds of music, whether it be gospel, country, Spanish, R&B, and sometimes I even throw in Oprah in there! I would say I belt 90s songs a lot too. I need to record myself doing that more.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Happiness comes from many things. I think to be happy, you have to live in gratitude.
Do you support any charities?
Yes! St. Jude’s and Salvation Army
What is your favorite healthy food?
My favorite healthy food is a quinoa burger or snack wise, cucumbers. They make me feel hydrated and so refreshed.
And your favorite cheat food?
Cheat foods for me would include pastas and desserts. I’m a big dessert person.
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
When someone is trying to overcompensate and flex.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully living well, traveling with my family, making more memories!
How would you describe your fashion style?
I only recently have learned about vintage pieces. They feel unique and timeless so I’m really into that right now. Usually, my style is a comfy hoody and sweats, especially in studios – they are cold temperature wise!
What do you think of Social Media?
I think it’s a great networking tool where you can find people who are like minding. I love seeing artists roll outs, from the song choices to the aesthetic. I don’t like to base people’s importance by their numbers and followers, so it’s a tricky thing for me, but overall, I like that it serves others.
