Hi, Steven, please tell us a little about yourself.
Thank you for the question. I am honored to hold the titles of a 2x award-winning publicist, acclaimed radio host, media personality, and journalist. In addition to these roles, I proudly serve as the owner of United Angels Dream public relations firm and Power 98.5 satellite radio. Furthermore, I am privileged to be recognized as an international best-selling author.
Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
First and foremost, I express gratitude to God. Beyond that, my deepest appreciation goes to my adoptive parents, whose love and guidance have been fundamental in shaping me. Special thanks extend to my best friend Rebekah and her parents, who have played significant roles in my life. I am grateful to countless others who have generously shared their love and wisdom, contributing to the person and professional I have become today.
Describe yourself in three words.
Honest. Transparent. Joyful.
Name one of your strengths.
I am completely honest and transparent in all aspects of my life.
Can you tell us about your journey into radio and journalism?
My journey in radio and journalism spans over three decades of dedicated hard work and education. I’ve focused on building valuable relationships and learning from the best in the industry. Throughout this time, I’ve maintained an open mind and a resilient attitude, never taking anything personally.
What inspired you to pursue a career in media?
My aspiration to become one of the most recognized, respected, and trusted journalists in the world is deeply rooted in a profound commitment to being an exemplary representative for the public. In a time where the dissemination of honest news and information is often lacking, I am driven by the belief that the media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception and understanding.
Over the course of my career, spanning more than three decades, I have dedicated myself to the principles of journalistic integrity. Building on the foundation of hard work and nurturing meaningful relationships within the industry, I have continually sought to learn from the best in the field. This ongoing learning process has allowed me to refine my skills, keep an open mind, and adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of media and journalism.
In a world where misinformation and biased reporting can erode trust, I see my role as not only reporting the news but also as a guardian of truth and an advocate for transparency. My goal is to bridge the gap between the media and the public, fostering a relationship built on trust, respect, and the delivery of accurate and unbiased information.
By aspiring to be recognized globally, I aim to extend my reach and influence, ensuring that the news and information I deliver contribute positively to the public discourse. Ultimately, my journey as a journalist is driven by the belief that an informed public is essential for a thriving and democratic society.
Since doing so, it has catapulted my satellite radio station, Power 98.5 Satellite Radio, and provided the opportunity to host my radio show on Biz Talk Radio and Biz Talk TV, reaching millions.
What advice have you received from other reporters and broadcasters?
The support from fellow journalists, media companies, and broadcasters has been overwhelmingly positive. This widespread support has set the stage, establishing the understanding that when I deliver the news, share my story, or offer sage advice, it is done with objectivity, neutrality, and fairness.
What does a typical day look like for a journalist, radio host, and 2x award-winning publicist?
Thank you for the question. As a publicist, journalist, and media personality, maintaining alignment is a natural process. The synergy arises because all three of my roles complement each other seamlessly. In prospecting, I engage in activities such as emailing, making phone calls, and conducting thorough research. This multifaceted approach is essential across all three roles, whether working on my personal brand, managing media relations, or assisting others with contract negotiations and performance analysis.
A critical aspect of my work involves ensuring transparency by disclosing all material facts, leaving no room for misunderstandings. This commitment to clarity extends to crafting narratives and context in a manner that presents information comprehensively and ethically. Overall, the harmonious integration of these roles enhances the effectiveness of my endeavors and allows me to navigate the diverse responsibilities inherent in public relations, journalism, and media with precision.
To maintain the integrity of my work, I prioritize beginning with my public relations firm, United Angels Dream, and my satellite radio station, Power 98.5. Starting from this foundation allows me to uphold a consistent standard aligned with my morals and values. I prefer to establish a strong base within my own ventures rather than become entangled in areas of someone else’s business where practices and behaviors may not align with my ethical principles. This deliberate approach ensures that I can uphold the integrity of my work across all aspects of my professional endeavors.
What advice would you give someone entering journalism or broadcastng?
Do not allow someone to mold you into a product or identity that goes against your true nature.
What has been your most challenging interview and why?
To be honest, I haven’t encountered a bad interview. However, I would emphasize the importance of establishing rapport with your guests before the official interview. This approach helps to disarm them, making it clear that your intention is not to use or exploit them but rather to engage in a genuine and respectful conversation. Building a connection beforehand can contribute to a more positive and authentic interview experience.
How do you manage the balance between personal beliefs and journalistic neutrality?
The balance occurs when you embrace your authentic self and prioritize transparency. A valuable piece of advice I received long ago is that by being real and authentic, those who are not meant to be in your life won’t stay for long, or they may choose not to enter your life because it’s evident that you won’t tolerate being taken advantage of. This approach helps create boundaries and attracts people who appreciate and respect your genuine nature.
Has technology impacted the way you work as a journalist and radio host?
While technology has undoubtedly made many aspects of life easier, I am not willing to always prioritize convenience. In my experience, technology has, at times, fostered a sense of laziness and a diminished interest in pursuits that don’t offer immediate self-satisfaction. It’s important to acknowledge the potential downsides of relying solely on technology and strive for a balance that encourages genuine engagement and care in various aspects of life.
What role do you believe social media plays in modern journalism?
I would say that the current use of social media often takes on the characteristics of vigilante behavior. If this form of communication had existed in the 70’s and 80’s, I believe there would have been an increase in lawsuits and suicides globally. While it has undeniably facilitated connections across the world, overall, social media has also enabled a considerable amount of stupidity and nonsense.
Indeed, social media has become a platform that, unfortunately, can encourage grotesque behavior, particularly in the form of bullying. It has provided people with tools that, instead of being assets for positive communication, can be used as weapons to inflict harm. The dark side of social media highlights the need for responsible and ethical use to prevent the amplification of negative behaviors.
What are your favorite topics to cover?
Some of my favorite topics to cover on “Live On Air with Steven Cuoco,” Distract TV (where I am a contributing writer), and on Power 98.5 Satellite Radio and Biz Talk Radio include entertainment, sports, business, film, and TV.
If you were a book, what would the title be and why?
That’s interesting that you should ask. I have created a book series titled “United Angels Dream,” named after my public relations firm. It’s a three-part series, starting with my international bestseller, part one: “Guided Transformation: Poems, Quotes, and Inspiration.” My second book is scheduled to be published in 2024 or 2025. It’s important to me to publish my second book when the timing makes sense. The content is ready, and I’m still conducting interviews from when I published book one in 2012.
What do you think is the secret to having a successful social media account?
Be yourself and showcase all the amazing and wonderful aspects of your personality that make you endearing and loved. This doesn’t mean constantly presenting yourself in a provocative manner or engaging in explicit content. It’s noteworthy how platforms like TikTok and Instagram permit content that borders on explicit, considering their broad audience, including impressionable individuals of any age who might follow trends out of desperation. It’s crucial to promote a healthier and more positive online environment.
People often pass judgment on adult stars for their choices and professions. However, a contradiction arises when individuals, including mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, and their children, engage in self-promotion or explicit content on social media while maintaining a facade of wholesomeness. If one chooses to project a particular image, it’s important to own and be honest about their choices, rather than disguising them. Regardless of attempts to sugarcoat it, people tend to see through the contradictions and recognize actions for what they are.
As a popular personality, you are followed by so many people. How do you feel about the pressure of always doing the right thing and encouraging people to follow their own dreams?
Being honest is relatively easy for me because I don’t strive to manufacture an identity or portray someone else. However, it has been frustrating and has taken considerable effort to shape my social media presence, given that platforms like Instagram and TikTok are designed for profit, hence the name “social media.” Even after following guidelines and taking measures to curate the content I wanted to see, it took time to refine my social media experience. As mentioned earlier, despite efforts to avoid certain content, platforms occasionally introduce unwanted material, requiring me to report it. It’s essential to remain vigilant, avoid making exceptions, and resist allowing external influences to invade your space and coerce you into conforming to their agendas.
I’d like to address every so-called straight guy out there—enough with the gay for pay and gay baiting. People in the LGBT community face discrimination and violence and are murdered simply for being who they are, and being gay is not a choice. Exploiting communities and making money off of a misguided fantasy is both disrespectful and harmful. It’s crucial to recognize the impact of such actions and strive for more empathy and understanding.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Take life at your own pace and resist the pressure to constantly rush or conform to someone else’s timeline. Life unfolds differently for everyone, and it’s essential to embrace your own journey, recognizing that personal growth and accomplishments may not adhere to external expectations. Allow yourself the time and space to explore, learn, and evolve in a way that aligns with your individual needs and aspirations. The beauty of life lies in the unique path each person travels, so don’t let external pressures dictate the rhythm of your journey.
Three things you can’t leave home without.
The three things I cannot leave home without are having enough clothing options to choose from, my skincare products, and my supplements. These essentials contribute to my well-being, comfort, and daily routine, ensuring that I am prepared for various situations and able to maintain my self-care practices wherever I go.
What is your favorite quote?
It happens to be one of my own: “In the art of communication, we must master the delicate dance; to speak with kindness, to listen with humility, and to depart leaving respect intact.”
