How did you get started acting?
I began doing commercials at the age of 4, my first was an Oscar Meyer Hot Dog commercial. I then moved on to guest starring roles and eventually Full House at age 5. I started acting at my own request, as I LOVED performing! I used to tell my parents that I wanted to be a “modeler” on TV, which was what I called actors when I was 4. Little did I know I’d be doing it the rest of my life and loving every moment of it!
Did you go to acting school?
I went to acting classes during the later years of Full House, as I was auditioning for other parts and wanted to be able to expand my knowledge of my craft. As an adult, I’ve attended classes at The Acting Corps in North Hollywood, which taught me so much as an actor.
How do you prepare for a role?
It varies from role to role, depending on what is being asked of the character. I’ve done a movie, “Walt Before Mickey”, in which I played Walt Disney’s aunt Charlotte, so I read up on Walt and his family and early life. To reprise my role as Stephanie, I’ve created a fun back story for her and filled in the blanks of what she’s been up to in the past 20 years. Even if it never comes out on camera, knowing who these characters are as people helps for me to find the motivation behind what they’re doing and why.
Did your family support your decision to become an actress?
My family was incredibly supportive, although when I got into the business at age 4, I don’t think they ever expected it to be my life long career!
How did you cast for Full House?
I was incredibly lucky in getting cast on Full House, as I never really auditioned for the role of Stephanie. I did a guest appearance on the show, “Valerie”, which had the same producers as Full House. They had Full House in the early stages of development at the time and thought I would be perfect for Stephanie Tanner’s character.
How did you managed to deal with the success of the show?
As a child, I don’t think I really grasped just how many people watched this show! As I’ve gotten older, I have come to understand just what a pop culture icon this show is. Especially as we’ve been doing press for the new “Fuller House” episodes, people are SO excited! Growing up on TV was definitely a unique experience, but I am so grateful for it.
Do you remember how you felt when the show was ending?
It was heartbreaking when the original Full House ended. We were a very close family, not only the cast, but the crew as well. And knowing that the life that I had come to know every day for the past 8 years would be changing was a very sad thought.
Are you still in contact with the cast?
We are still incredibly close and get together all the time. We never really stopped being a family in the past 20 years since the show has been off the air!
What is your more memorable episode?
One of the episodes that I always thought was fun was when Stephanie crashed the car through the kitchen! That seems to be one that’s been a favorite of fans throughout the years as well.
Now about the new spinoff, tell us about it?
The new spinoff, “Fuller House”, which airs on Netflix in 2016, centers around the characters of Stephanie, DJ and Kimmy. They all come together to help DJ and Kimmy raise their children after DJ’s husband, a SF firefighter was tragically killed and Kimmy was recently seperated from her husband. Stephanie, DJ and Kimmy and DJ’s three boys and Kimmy’s teenage daughter are the new cast of “Fuller House”.
Who is on the show from the original cast?
Everyone (except the Olsen’s) appear on the first episode of Fuller House and then the original cast make several appearances throughout the remainder of the first season of the show. Fans of the original Full House will be excited to see the Tanner family back throughout the season!
What can you tell us about Fuller House’s storyline?
I can’t say too much, as we’re trying to keep the episodes a fun surprise once they launch in 2016 on Netflix! But I can say that fans of the original show will be happy to have that familiar Full House feel back, and people who’ve never seen the original show will also fall in love with this new show all on its own!
What is next for you?
Currently, I’m enjoying a little break on hiatus, but I do have a jewelry line, called Jodie Sweetin for Erica Annenberg which launched in September that I’m very excited about! You can see that at js4ea.com I’m also continuing on with my college speaking tour starting early next year, where I talk about my story and my life growing up on Full House, as well as the years after. There’s lots of exciting things on the horizon for 2016!
What inspires you?
My children and my family. Whenever I have a bad day, or I’m tired, or things just feel a little grey, I look at the faces of my two daughters, Zoie and Beatrix and I know that I can do anything!
Where do you see yourself in a few years?
I would love to start producing and writing in the next few years. I have several ideas that have been in my head for a while, so I think it may be time to start doing my own work!
How did you stay fit?
I have an amazing trainer, Brittany Davis, who kicks my butt 3-4 times a week!
What advice would you give to those who want to be in this business?
This is a business of extreme highs and lows! You can be on top of the world and then not knowing where your next job may be coming from, but if it’s what you truly love, there is nothing like it!
How’s your typical day?
It depends on if I’m working or not, but when I’m just enjoying life at home, I’m usually up early getting my daughters to school, off to the gym, home to take care of business calls, cooking dinner and trying to balance my home and work life!
Best advice ever given?
There are two places to come from in life: Love or Fear. Always come from Love.
What music do you have in your iPod?
I have a mix of pop, hip-hop, rock… it really depends on what mood I’m in!
How important is Social Media for you?
I have amazing fans on social media!! My twitter and Instagram followers show such love and support, it’s amazing!! I try and post fun, positive things on my pages and lots of awesome pics of behind the scenes work stuff. And my kids… lots of my kids! Haha!
