Hi! I am Kate Marie Tomlinson. I moved from Jackson Hole Wyoming when I was 12 to pursue my acting career.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Bubbly, Energetic, and Driven
Who has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why?
My parents for sure. My parents have been supportive of my dreams since before I can remember. My mom gave up her medical practice to live with me in LA so I could act and my dad works all the time to support us. They are so supportive and I wouldn’t be here without them.
Why and how did you get started in acting?
Musical theatre was my favorite hobby and it allowed me to develop a passion for singing and acting. One day I went to an acting school called Seattle Talent and my life was changed forever. My manager found me at a Seattle Talent showcase and encouraged me to move to LA.
What was the first role you ever did?
My first role was Amber on Andimack. I filmed the pilot but when the series was picked up they decided to replace me with someone who had more experience. It was heartbreaking to be recast but two weeks later, I booked Hannah on Stuck in the Middle. So my first aired role was Stuck in the Middle.
Do you have or had acting classes?
I’ve done lots of acting classes. I recently did an improv class at Groundlings. I think the best classes are auditions and filming though. You learn by doing.
Tell us about your experience in castings?
Auditioning is a blast but it can be very scary. Most casting directors make you feel welcome and calm. I love auditioning because it’s practice for the real thing and it gets you comfortable with talking to different people. I like to be prepared. I am a perfectionist which is good and bad. It is good because it means I work really hard. It is bad because I often overthink my auditions. The best advice I have been given is to do your best and then move on. I am still working on that.
Tell us about your recurring guest role on Disney’s “Stuck in the Middle,” and about your character?
Hannah is competitive and sweet. She is the love interest of Ethan, the oldest boy of the Diaz family. We filmed on a yacht and in a waterpark which is so cool.
How was working in big productions like “The Thundermans,” and “Speechless?”
Filming is always a good experience. The Thundermans was on Nickelodeon. I had a blast and met some very talented young actresses. Speechless is on ABC. It was definitely a fun experience!
How do you prepare for a role?
To prepare for a role, I read the script and the breakdown for my character. I then come up with a personality for the character. You have to put your own spin on a character otherwise it won’t be believable. I analyze the script and take notes. Taking notes is how I remember what works and what doesn’t. I memorize as much as I can and then I present it to the casting director. I always make sure that I am flexible enough with my character to be able to take direction from casting, directors, producers, and writers. Being able to take direction is everything in acting.
What have you learned from your other actors?
I’ve learned that making mistakes is normal and sometimes mistakes get you the job. I am also learning from other actors that forgetting your previous auditions is for the best and will help you.
Who is your favorite actress?
Audrey Hepburn, hands down. I love the 50s! Movies and music from that era are the best. I love Audrey Hepburn because she is talented and classy.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope to be on my own show or a lead in a movie. I would also like to be a singer and in five years I would like to have an album and go on tour.
If you were not an actress what else you will be doing?
If I wasn’t in LA acting, I would be at Jackson Hole High school doing musical theatre and skiing.
What do you think of Social Media in the Entertainment business?
Social media has its pluses and minuses. I like social media because I can connect with fans and other actors. A minus is that a lot of jobs look at numbers and sometimes that is a deal breaker. It makes acting a little harder because its not just about your talent, it is also about numbers.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Happiness is to look at life positively and spend time with the ones you love. I think happiness is a choice. The media can be really negative. It often shows a lot of people who are unhappy with their lives. I think you can choose happiness most of the time. There is always a positive; sometimes you just have to look a little harder. Tough times won’t last forever.
Best advice ever given?
The best advice I ever got was that you will never make it if you don’t try. This industry is hard. Harder than people think. It isn’t all glamour, fame, and money. It takes hard work and dedication. Many times, I have wanted to give up. I have cried over roles I lost. But if I give up, I may never know what I am capable of doing. I love it enough to stick with it.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Spinach. I am not a huge vegetable person but I love raw spinach.
And your favorite cheat food?
Don’t make me choose just one. I love cheese, especially gourmet cheese like brie. I also love cookies. Warm cookies are the best, especially if there is peanut butter in them.
What’s your favorite music?
I love 50s music. Two of my favorite songs are Pretty Little Angel Eyes by Curtis Lee and A Little Bit of Soap by the Jarmels. My favorite contemporary artists are Ariana Grande and Tori Kelly.
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
It’s awkward if you act like we have nothing to talk about. I love talking and when a guy is not super talkative I get bored. I also don’t understand why some guys don’t dress a little better. That is shallow I know, but if I spend 2 hours looking nice for you at least shower and don’t wear a hat.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I have a lot of vintage outfits. I love to shop at a store called Varga. I think it is the only store that I can go into and always find something I want. I also love oversized sweaters and tees with boots.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to meet Audrey Hepburn. I have always wished I could’ve been an actress in the 50s. I think the movies from that time are just amazing and the music is so good. Audrey is so classy and her style is amazing.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
My perfect Sunday depends on how I feel. I either want to binge watch movies all day or I want to go outside and hike or ski.
Do you have a role model?
Am I allowed to say Audrey Hepburn again? Again, she’s classy and talented. I would choose Jennifer Lawrence and Ariana Grande as people who are alive who inspire me. They are both super real and very talented.
Do you support any charity?
I work a lot with Special Olympics. I would love to work more with kids and animals. Giving your time to help others is something I think everyone should do. It doesn’t cost anything and it can make such a big difference in someone’s life. I usually get more out of it than the people I’m helping. Doing charity work has taught me a lot about who I want to be and what I want to do with my life.
Any future plans you want to share with us?
Right now I am auditioning a lot. I have two projects in the works, a movie and a TV series. They are both still in negotiations so I can’t say anything about them yet. I am also hoping to start a hypoallergenic makeup line. I have severe allergic contact dermatitis and have to order special makeup that isn’t super available. I’d love to create a makeup line that is safe, readily available, and has lots of fun products.
