Hello I’m Mandi Macias, I’m a singer/songwriter, actress, dancer, musician and performer. I am sixteen years old and have 8 songs currently out on all music platforms ie. Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Youtube Music, etc… I have written all my songs so far. I’m still in school twice a week and I’m a junior, and will be a senior in this year in July. I love to dance, hang out with my family. I have 5 older siblings, two brothers and 3 older sisters. We are a very close family. My sisters are my best friends and lately since I’ve been busy, its been hard to connect as much with them as i’m use to.
Describe yorself in 3 words?
I would describe myself as Creative, Funny and Loyal.
Who is your biggest supporter?
My biggest supporter is my mom. But it would be unfair to just say one supporter because my dad, siblings, grandma, Marlene (my makeup artist), Angela my vocal teacher, AJ Smet my music producer and Mykel my acting coach & trainer. It takes a village to help an aspiring artist.
How’s a typical day in your life?
My morning I get up and have small healthy breakfast and get ready for school on the days I go, and days I don’t go to school, I’ll do a run or hike and then I do school work. Lunch time I will go work out and then work on my music. In the evening I normally take a dance class or exercising class with my sister Angela who is the instructor at the gym. I also take acting class for 4 hours every Monday. My days go fast and I’m always busy.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
1. Unique 2. Empowering 3. Sassy
Now please tell us about your music singles “Young Girl”, “SITMF” AND “Crying in the Club”?
My music singles are SITMF which i collaborated with Precious Luv who raps in my song. It’s about how people are fake and about talking behind someone’s back and basically to say “hey say it to my face”. say it to that person, it’s about bullying and how people can hurt someone with words and lie talking behind their backs. “Young Girl” isn’t this song is off my EP “sixteen”. It’s about a teen girl who starts drinking at a young age to try and be cool and gets herself into trouble with a boy because her mind is clouded with alcohol and she ends up passing out at a party. In reality she wishes she was still a little girl being loved by her parents. The lyrics talk about how the young girl wrote this song to pass the message on. This song is not about my own experience, but being a teen you see things like this happening around you. I felt a need to tap on the subject to maybe help some girl out one day. The single “Crying in the Club” was my only cover song it’s actually sang by Camila Cabello, but I hadn’t finished any of my original songs at the time so I wanted to put out a cover song and music video, this one was a good song, so I recorded this as my first song out. I felt this was a good way to hear me vocally and find me on youtube, which worked with over 84K views and I didn’t have much subscribers yet.
You were also part of the Black Eyed Peas music video. Please tell us about it?
I really enjoyed being on the Black Eyed Peas video called Big Big Love, I was a cheerleader in this video and it was shot at a high school. It is about a school shooter and touches on school shootings. It was a two day shoot and it was a lot of fun and I met some great new friends from working on this video.
When did you start dancing?
I have always danced because I was a cheerleader mascot at 3 years old. I cheered till I was 9 years old and we competed in cheer dance. During that time my mom put me in ballet and tap dance when I was 4 but it was only for once year. I did dance cheer and learned mostly hip hop dance, we competed with both Sharp International and Jamz and went to Las Vegas, Magic Mountain and Sea World for competitions.
Did you take dancing classes?
Yes, when I was 4 years old I went to Chatsworth Dance Studio with my older sisters and my mom put me into ballet and tap dance. There was a gap in between dance because I ran track and field, cross country and played soccer. I ran cross country and made it to finals at ESPN in Florida, I finished in 9th place in my division. That was fun, but i loved to sprint so stayed in track and field for 5 years before I realized i missed acting and dancing. Then when I was 12 years old, I took ballet, contemporary, and hip hop dance for a little over a year. Then my middle school friends took me to their dance class but they failed to tell me it was an advanced hip hop class with a popular choreographer. I didn’t do to bad and decided to stay at it. I stayed with the same choreographer for 4 years until my EP was released in November 2018. Since then I have now worked with Leo Moctezuma (choreographer to Pink and Britney Spears just a few of his professional clients) and Rumer Noel (who worked with Maddie and Mackenzie from dance moms) I love dancing with them, They’re very positive choreographers and have helped me to get ready for my High School Nation Tour and gave me a new passion for dancing.
Any advice for aspiring dancers?
As for advice to aspiring dancers, just find a positive teacher who lifts you up when your dancing. Dancing is an art and no one should make you feel bad. A good choreographer will inspire you to want to keep dancing.
What do you love most about dancing?
What I love most about dancing is the freedom to let your body move to the music, to feel free. I love to dance but let me say this, I still do not see myself quote “a dancer”, I do dance, but my career path is definitely a singer/performer who dances with amazing professional dancers.
What type of dance do you like best?
I like contemporary dance the best, not sure why I do but that’s my favorite style of dancing. It reminds me of writing a song, with your body moving to lyrics and acting them out with grace but not to much of one style of dance (ie ballet or hip hop) just a nice mix.
What is next for Mandi Macias in 2019?
So what’s next for me in 2019? So far this year I have already done a Tour with High School Nation, performed as a celebrity singer for Girlfriends and Champagne Grammy event in Hollywood this year. I released a single this March 2019 called “Be Like That”. I have two more songs that are almost done and will be collaborating with some really cool artist I met on tour. I think I’m going to get an agent this year and do some acting again and just enjoy and embrace my artist craft. I’m very excited to work on my goals and to make sure I stay focused on my school work as well.
What project is still on your bucket list?
My bucket list is to get an agent and do some acting this year. I also want to collaborate with this artist Noah from Now United, I wrote this song that I feel his vocals would be best fit for this song. So if you know him please pass this on (hahahaha, strictly business of course).
Best advice ever given?
I guess to just be yourself, be you, and don’t get caught up in others negativity. To live each day to your fullest capabilities and to not forget to smile, laugh and be happy!
3 things you can’t leave home without?
Ha Ha, you’re going to think i’m weird but #1. My gallon of water #2. Lip Gloss and #3. Gum
What is your favorite song? Why?
My favorite song is “Sweater Weather” by the Neighborhood. I love the catchy melody and the descriptive lyrics.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would like to meet Harry Styles, because I really would like to sit down and write a song with him. I feel like we would connect and we have similar personalities. We would write an amazing song together and even maybe sing a duet together. Also can I add that Taylor Swift and I would write an amazing song together! We have similar techniques in writing.
Name one of your strengths?
One of my strengths is the ability to work hard and get my projects done and be committed to finishing a project on time. I’ve also been told that I’m a leader and that kids look up to me, which I guess is a cool strength, I love to mentor young girls.
What kind of music do you listen today?
I listen to all types of music, pop, indie, alternative, classical, musical theater, classic rock, rap. I love ALL music!!!
What’s your idea of a perfect Sunday is?
A perfect Sunday would be hanging out at the beach with my family and friends.
Do you support any charities?
I do support charities! In 2018 I worked with LLS (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society), I was part of the Student of the Year program, we had a team of 3 teens (2 other teens plus me) we worked for 3 months on raising over $38,000.00. I work with different types of Charities. I am the 11th grade President of Leadership at my school and right now we’re doing a charity for Operation Gratitude. Also I helped raise money through leadership and our 11th grade class made over $600.00 which we used to purchase Christmas gifts for Toys for Tots.
